RTP, House Edge, Volatility & Hit Frequency: The Four Numbers Explained
Desk research: game definitions, published rules and worked calculations. We have not tested deposits or played these games for this guide. See how we review casinos.
RTP describes theoretical return; house edge describes expected cost. Volatility describes the spread of possible payouts, and hit frequency describes how often a spin pays something. None predicts your next result or how long your money will last.

The four numbers at a glance
| Term | BM / local usage | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTP | Peratusan pulangan | Theoretical payout as a percentage of stakes | Your session's return |
| House edge | Kelebihan rumah | Expected loss per unit staked | Your maximum loss |
| Volatility | Volatiliti | How widely payouts vary | When a large win will arrive |
| Hit frequency | Kekerapan menang | How often a qualifying payout occurs | How often you make a net profit |
What is RTP? (peratusan pulangan pemain)
A 96% theoretical RTP means RM96 in expected prizes per RM100 wagered under the stated game rules. This includes money won and staked again: turnover is not the same as your deposit.
Worked example: 200 spins at RM1 each create RM200 of turnover. At 96% RTP, expected prizes total RM192 and expected net loss is RM8. You may win overall or lose much more. RTP alone cannot tell you the probability of either result.
There is no universal number of spins after which your result must match the advertised RTP. The game's payout distribution matters. Britain's Gambling Commission explains why RTP is not a session promise; its rules do not certify a Malaysia-facing operator.
What is house edge? (kelebihan rumah)
For the same wager basis, house edge = 100% − RTP. A 96% RTP has a 4% edge; a 97% RTP has a 3% edge. On RM100 of turnover, that is RM4 versus RM3 in expected loss.
Expected loss = turnover × house edge. Our rollover guide applies this to required wagering; the bonus types guide explains the other conditions that affect an offer.
Examples under stated rules
| Game / bet | House edge | Equivalent RTP |
|---|---|---|
| Baccarat Banker, eight decks, 5% commission on wins | About 1.06% | About 98.94% |
| Baccarat Player, eight decks; ties push | About 1.24% | About 98.76% |
| Sic bo Big / Small, even-money payout, triples lose | About 2.78% | About 97.22% |
| Single-zero roulette, standard payouts without special zero rules | About 2.70% | About 97.30% |
| Double-zero roulette, standard bets except the five-number bet | About 5.26% | About 94.74% |
| Illustrative slot configured at 96% RTP | 4% | 96% |
The baccarat values are supported by Wizard of Odds' mathematical analysis. For sic bo, 105 of the 216 equally likely three-dice outcomes win a Small bet under these rules: (111 − 105) ÷ 216 = 2.78%. Standard roulette's corresponding edges are 1/37 and 2/38. Side bets, different payouts and rules such as la partage change the calculation. Blackjack has no single universal edge: see how blackjack rules affect it.
RM example: RM1,000 wagered on standard Banker bets has about RM10.60 expected loss; the same turnover on sic bo Big / Small has about RM27.80. That is roughly 2.6 times the expected cost. Our bankroll guide adds stake and pace to the comparison.
Changing the order or size of bets does not remove a fixed edge per ringgit. More turnover increases expected loss. See our baccarat systems explanation and roulette calculations.
What is volatility? (volatiliti)
Volatility measures payout variability. High-volatility games can place more of their return in rare, large prizes; low-volatility games can spread it across smaller returns. These labels are broad descriptions, not a timetable.
Two games can both have 96% RTP and very different payout distributions. Without those distributions, we cannot calculate which is more likely to exhaust RM100 within a particular number of spins. At a fixed RM1 total stake, with no extra charges, RM100 covers at least 100 spins even if every spin returns nothing.
Check the provider's stated volatility and the actual stake, including extra feature costs. Our Malaysia slots guide has a selection checklist. Lower volatility does not make gambling safe or guarantee longer play.
What is hit frequency? (kekerapan menang)
Hit frequency commonly counts spins returning any prize, including less than the stake. Check the provider's definition. A RM0.20 return on a RM1 spin can count as a hit even though you lost RM0.80.
Example: if each spin has a 30% chance of a qualifying hit, the expected count over 100 spins is 30. The actual count varies, and those hits need not cover the RM100 staked.
A high hit rate does not, by itself, establish low volatility or high RTP. Frequent small payouts can coexist with rare huge prizes. NetEnt publishes a 23% hit frequency for Starburst; that is a named game figure, not a market-wide benchmark.
Designed RTP versus observed returns
All four metrics describe the game's mathematics. Observed returns are different: they measure prizes actually paid divided by stakes over a stated sample. Britain's regulator explicitly distinguishes theoretical and actual RTP.
A daily “RTP” display might show past results, an advertised configuration or an unsupported claim. Ask what it measures, over what period, from whose data and over how many bets. Even genuine past returns do not predict the next independent spin. Our RTP 918Kiss hari ini explainer discusses these displays.
For independent spins under unchanged rules, earlier wins and losses do not make a payout due. Stateful bonus features and progressive jackpots need their own rules checked; “every game always has identical odds” is too broad.
One title can have several configurations. Hacksaw's Wanted Dead or a Wild page, checked 6 October 2026, lists 96.38%, 94.55%, 92.33% and 88.42%. A provider's headline figure does not establish which version a particular operator uses.
Read the current game's help screen and compare the exact version and mode. A mismatch needs clarification; it does not automatically prove manipulation. For related reading, see our JILI profile, Ocean King guide and fishing-game odds guide. This glossary does not verify every configuration discussed on those pages.
An operator's aggregate payout percentage can blend different games and a particular reporting period. It is not necessarily a game's theoretical RTP or a withdrawal-success rate. See the withdrawal terms glossary.
What to check before relying on a number
- Find the exact game, version, mode and total stake in its rules. Our slot mechanics glossary explains paylines and features.
- Look for the configured RTP and its scope: base game, features or a separately described jackpot contribution.
- Use published volatility and hit-rate definitions. A short demo is not a reliable way to measure them.
- Check bonus restrictions separately: game mathematics does not determine whether winnings are withdrawable.
Missing or conflicting information is a reason to leave a claim unconfirmed, not to invent a number. Our Malaysia comparison and review methodology cover operator checks separately.
FAQ
Is a 97% RTP slot better than a 96% one?
For the same turnover, its theoretical expected loss is lower: RM3 rather than RM4 per RM100 wagered. RTP alone does not establish session risk, jackpot odds or the chance of finishing ahead.
Adakah RTP berubah setiap hari?
What is a good hit frequency?
There is no universal target. A hit can return less than your stake. Check the definition, payout distribution and RTP together instead of treating frequent hits as profit.
Does high volatility mean a higher RTP?
No. Games can share the same theoretical return while distributing their prizes differently. A volatility label alone cannot tell you RTP.
Can I use RTP to pick when to play?
No. RTP does not predict the next result. Past payouts do not make a win due on independent spins; features with changing states require their own rules to be read.
