How to Play Baccarat: Rules, Bets and the Real Odds
Researched with AI tools, checked against the sources linked on this page and approved by our editor before publishing. How we work.
In punto banco baccarat (bakarat) you bet on the Banker hand, the Player hand or a Tie, and fixed rules deal the rest. On a standard eight-deck table with 5% commission on Banker wins, Banker costs about 1.06% of what you stake, Player 1.24% and a Tie paying 8:1 about 14.36%. No betting system or road pattern changes those figures, and playing online from Malaysia can be an offence (see the law section).
Cards, totals and drawing rules
Player and Banker are names for the two hands, not for you or the casino: you bet on which hand finishes closer to 9. The figures on this page assume eight standard decks; check the rules panel of the game you are viewing.
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| Ace | 1 |
| 2–9 | Face value |
| 10, Jack, Queen, King | 0 |
Only the last digit of a total counts: 7 plus 8 makes 15, a hand worth 5; 9 plus 4 makes 3. No hand goes over 9 and nobody busts. The hand closer to 9 wins; equal totals are a Tie.
- Bets go on Player, Banker or Tie before the deal.
- Each hand gets two cards. If either totals 8 or 9 (a natural), neither hand draws and the round is settled.
- Otherwise Player draws a third card on 0–5 and stands on 6 or 7.
- Banker then follows the table below. Nobody chooses: the dealer or the software applies it.
| Banker’s two-card total | If Player stood | If Player drew, Banker draws when Player’s third card is |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 1 or 2 | Draws | Any value |
| 3 | Draws | Any value except 8 |
| 4 | Draws | 2–7 |
| 5 | Draws | 4–7 |
| 6 | Stands | 6 or 7 |
| 7 | Stands | Never: stands |
A third-card value of 0 means a 10, Jack, Queen or King. Banker totals of 8 or 9 are naturals, so they never reach this table. Banker’s rule uses Player’s third card, and under these rules Banker wins slightly more often (45.86% against 44.62%), which is why Banker wins carry commission.
The three main bets
These figures assume eight decks, 5% commission on Banker wins and a Tie paying 8:1. They match Wizard of Odds’ eight-deck analysis, and we reproduced them by working through every deal of an eight-deck shoe under the rules above.
| Bet | BM term | Payout | Chance of winning | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | Banker / bandar | 1:1 minus 5% commission | ~45.86% | ~1.06% |
| Player | Pemain | 1:1 | ~44.62% | ~1.24% |
| Tie | Seri / seri sama | 8:1 | ~9.52% | ~14.36% |
The chances count ties as a separate outcome; on a tie, Banker and Player bets are returned. Banker is the cheapest of the three on this paytable. Player costs about RM1.80 more per RM1,000 staked, a defensible choice if you would rather not pay commission.
Banker’s 1.06% is lower than standard single-zero roulette (2.70%) or sic bo Small/Big with triples losing (2.78%). The Tie is the trap: at 8:1 it costs more than 13 times as much as Banker, and a 9:1 payout still leaves it at about 4.84%. Dragon Tiger shows the same pattern: its Tie costs 10.36% at 11:1 and 32.77% at 8:1.
What expected cost means in ringgit
| You wager | Banker (1.06%) | Player (1.24%) | Tie (14.36%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RM500 | ~RM5.30 | ~RM6.20 | ~RM71.80 |
| RM1,000 | ~RM10.60 | ~RM12.40 | ~RM143.60 |
| RM5,000 | ~RM53 | ~RM62 | ~RM718 |
These are average losses over the stated turnover, using the rounded edges. They are not a forecast for one session, which can end well ahead or well behind. Turnover is not deposit: fifty RM20 bets already make RM1,000 of turnover. Our RTP and house-edge glossary explains the calculation.
Check the variant before comparing bets
- Standard commission: Banker wins pay 0.95 to 1. Banker 1.06%, Player 1.24%.
- Super 6 (half-pay six): no commission, but a winning Banker total of 6 pays 1 to 2. That win comes up about 5.39% of the time, and halving it costs more than the commission did: Banker rises to about 1.46% (Wizard of Odds), so Player’s 1.24% becomes the cheaper bet.
- EZ Baccarat: no commission, but a Banker bet pushes when Banker wins with a three-card 7 (EZ Baccarat’s rules). Our calculation puts its Banker bet at about 1.02%, so the Super 6 figures do not apply to every no-commission game.
- Tie payout: both 8:1 and 9:1 exist; read the Tie line before betting.
- Speed tables: the same edge per bet, but more hands an hour means more turnover and a larger expected cost per hour.
- Side bets: read the qualifying event and full paytable, because similar names can describe different bets. Our strategy guide prices seven common ones; all cost more than Banker.
If a table’s rules panel does not state the commission and payouts, treat its house edge as unknown.
What works, and what doesn’t
- Match the bet to the table: Banker on a standard commission table, Player on a Super 6 table.
- Skip the Tie and the side bets: they cost from about 2.5 to 28 times Banker’s edge.
- Control turnover: fewer and smaller bets, slower tables and a fixed budget lower your expected cost. Nothing else does.
- Read the paytable first: the commission, the six rule and the Tie payout set the price.
Road maps record past results; a streak does not predict the next hand. Martingale and other progressions change how much you stake, not the edge on each ringgit, and on Banker the 5% commission means a win on the sixth stake still leaves you behind. Card counting is impractical in baccarat: in Wizard of Odds’ analysis it trims the edge only from 1.06% to about 1%, and against a continuous shuffler or a game that reshuffles every hand there is nothing to count. A baccarat bet’s return is fixed by the drawing rules and paytable, not by a daily setting, so “RTP hari ini” claims tell you nothing about the next hand. The baccarat strategy guide works through each with the arithmetic.
Separate game rules from operator checks

Malaysian law and support
Playing can be an offence for you. Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and section 6(1) of the Betting Act 1953 penalise players, each with a fine up to RM5,000, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both. In October 2023 the Court of Appeal upheld convictions for online gambling on laptops (Free Malaysia Today). An offshore licence is not a Malaysian one. On a standard eight-deck table with 5% commission, yes: about 1.06%, against 1.24% for Player. Under the Super 6 rule, where a winning Banker six pays 1 to 2, Banker rises to about 1.46% and Player becomes the cheaper bet.

Not on the usual payouts. At 8:1 its house edge is about 14.36%, roughly 13 times Banker’s, and at 9:1 it is still about 4.84%.
No. They record earlier results, and a streak does not predict the next hand. Cards leaving the shoe shift the odds only by tiny amounts, which is why card counting is impractical in baccarat.
This guide’s figures assume eight decks. Six-deck games exist and barely move the main bets (Wizard of Odds puts Banker at 1.056% with six decks against 1.058% with eight), so check the rules panel of the game you play.
